This fairly uncommon Gin comes from the Black Forest in Germany, Monkey 47 contains a fairly unusual ingredient: Cranberries! The 47 comes from the number of botanicals that go into this unique gin, and the fact it's bottled at a healthy 47%. Predictably complex, this is a robust and powerful gin with plenty of spice, fruit and herb flavours. It's very well structured, and difficult to unpick but a citrus fresh start segues into pine and wood notes for a drying finish.

THE GIFT

This release is about a special time of year and the vibrant, playful design of the packaging reflects the joyous celebratory nature of the occasion. The unique, multi-layered gift box showcases Erica Dorn’s bespoke abstract designs and the packaging’s colour palette also expresses the Hogmanay story. Red is a colour synonymous with our history and heritage. This is the outside colour and represents fire, created by the coal traditionally gifted during the Scottish custom of first footing, as well as providing connotations of good fortune, success, happiness and vitality. Upon opening the gift box you discover a blue interior, representing the night skies of Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve) and the blue from the national flag of Scotland, the Saltire.​ As the presentation box is opened, the bottle is surrounded by rich amber colours, shining like opening a chest of gold. This represents the Scottish shortbread, a rich, sweet biscuit consumed at Hogmanay, which is also present in the whisky notes.

A by-product in the chocolate-making process, these husks would have been sent to landfill or destroyed but have now been reborn with a renewed purpose.

PHILIPPONAT CUVÉE BLANC DE NOIRS – 2015 VINTAGE

A word from the Cellar Master It was clear since the summer that 2015 was going to be an exceptional vintage, in the sense of being different from the classic vintages. A relatively cool spring indicated that the grapes would be harvested on the usual dates, in the third week of September, which was indeed the case. However, there was no forewarning of an extremely dry summer, the driest in decades, accompanied by exceptionally sunny weather. The vineyard was therefore in the relatively rare position, in the Champagne region, of suffering strong water stress until early September, when some welcome rainfall arrived to boost the vines’ metabolisms and ensure satisfactory ripening. In our sectors of Mareuil-sur-Ay, Ay and Avenay-Val-d'Or, the harvest then took place in totally dry conditions, with the rains at the end of September only affecting us in the evening of the final day. In the majority of our south-facing vineyards, yields were moderate to low, providing optimal concentration. Grape maturity was far higher than average, without reaching extremes: between 11 and 12% potential alcohol in the Clos des Goisses, and 10.5 to 11% elsewhere.
