Whisky Sour Day

The origin of whisky sour can be traced back to the 1800s, during that time sailors in the British Navy has had something similar to the whisky sour long before the creation of this cocktail. During this era spirits were often used to fight off scurvy. Lemon & limes is your usual go to in order to fight off this disease. They added sugar & water for the flavoring in order to have a more subtle taste.

When it comes to the official record, there are three main points of reference for the Whiskey Sour. The first written record comes in the seminal 1862 book The Bartender’s Guide: How To Mix Drinks by Jerry Thomas. The original recipe reads:

Original Whiskey Sour Recipe

  • Take 1 large tea-spoonful of powdered white sugar dissolved in a little Seltzer or Apollinaris water
  • The juice of half a small lemon
  • 1 wine-glass of Bourbon or rye whiskey

A spritz of sugar syrup
A spritz of Angostura bitters
