The name Monkey Shoulder comes from the traditional malt whisky making process. In the old days, malt men would use large heavy malt shovels to turn malted barley by hand. Some of these malt men would develop a strain injury which had the tendency to cause their arm to hang down a little like a monkey and they nicknamed this condition “Monkey Shoulder”. The condition no longer exists but William Grant & Sons honour this whisky heritage. The bottle is labelled “Batch 27” as a reference to the original experimental batching of 27 casks. Bottled at the standard 40% ABV.

Akashi Single Malt Whisky is made at the White Oak distillery in the Hyogo prefecture. They make a wide range of traditional Japanese beverages and Whiskies in their White Oak Distillery. Ten months out of each year, the White Oak Distillery produces Sake and Shochu exclusively. So all of their Whisky production happens in just two months. Eigashima’s most popular Whisky is their Akashi Blend. But they also produce a few precious runs of their Akashi Single Malt — which is then divided up between their finished-woods and Whisky blends. That means that there is jut not a lot of this dram to go around. Technically, it’s a marriage of their Single Malt in three different agings — seven, five, and four year-old — from three different cask types — Spanish Sherry, New American Oak, and ex-Bourbon. Producing using lightly peated barley and aged in three different types of cask, this is the brand's flagship malt.
